Celebrating 36: A Toast to Life, Recovery and Pancit

Turning 36 feels different this year. It's not just another birthday; it's a profound milestone, a chance to pause and celebrate simply being here. After a recent and unexpected hospital stay, this birthday is less about blowing out candles and more about feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude.

In a time when my health was uncertain, the simple idea of a birthday celebration seemed far away. But as I've been recovering, the little things have taken on so much more meaning. And when it came time to plan my birthday meal, there was only one choice that felt right: 'pancit bato'.

For many Filipinos, the long, continuous noodles of a pancit dish symbolize long life and good health. It’s a tradition we carry with us, a beautiful superstition that graces our celebration tables. This year, that symbolism resonates with me on a deeply personal level. The pancit isn't just a delicious meal; it's a tangible wish for a long life that has been given new significance.

As I enjoyed a plate today, each forkful felt like a toast to my recovery—a hopeful prayer for a strong, healthy future. It was a moment to honor the incredible resilience of the human body and to be grateful for the care that helped me get back on my feet. This birthday isn't just about marking another year; it's about celebrating a second chance.

So, here's to 36. May this year be filled with strength, healing, and joy. It's a reminder that life is a gift, and every single day is worth celebrating.

What traditions or foods carry special meaning for you during a celebration?

P.S. Thank you to Baby Darius, his parents (Kaye & Denzel), mama and mama Sang for making my birthday extra special.
